Tracing fascinating recorder sonology

Discography

On her captivating journey, Susanne Fröhlich explores not only the vast family of recorder but also their literature. She presents some of the results of her studies in her new GENUIN album, which features Japanese music from 400 years ago alongside contemporary compositions, including several world premiere recordings. Listeners will experience works by Markus Zahnhausen, Chaya Czernowin, Gerriet Krishna Sharma, Sarah Nemtsov, and even Susanne Fröhlich herself. This album pushes the boundaries of recorders that have been technically enhanced, unveiling fascinating soundscapes like never before.

'
.' (Isabella Guzy, Kreuzer Leipzig)

‘UKAI - 迂回 presents an often underestimated instrument as an independent, fascinating
world of sound - and makes a lasting impression.'

(Dirk Wieschollek, nmz)
'As an explorative instrumentalist, Susanne Fröhlich is a driving force behind the repertoire
for the recorder in an imaginative way and has done away with common prejudices.'

The aim was to 'push the boundaries of the instrument in order to give the recorder a contemporary voice.
Fröhlich has achieved this in an impressive way.'

Mein persönliches Fazit: In jeder Hinsicht brillant!'
(Walter van Hauwe, Artikel in TIBIA)

'...everything at an exceptionally and overwhelmingly high level. Bravo!
...a CD that can be rediscovered again and again, and again tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow, etc. etc.
My personal conclusion: brilliant in every aspect!'

'...In her interpretation, the instrument becomes a vehicle for tonal discovery, a stage for virtuosity that is not limited to speed, but extends to the mastery of an enormous dynamic and tonal range. Fröhlich's playing is imbued with technical precision and creative freedom...'

.' (Ari Benjamin Meyers)

'I have known and appreciated Susanne Fröhlich's astonishing artistic breadth and abilities for years
and yet this album was a revelation. Sounds and contexts that I have never heard before.'

(Sarah Nemtsov)
'...Susanne's interpretation is wonderful - full of energy, fine, multi-faceted and virtuoso. She elicits all kinds of colors and sounds from the rough, bulky instrument - from breath and tone to noise and percussive elements. Susanne Fröhlich plays powerfully, densely and just as sensitively in the fragile moments. She holds the various contrasting parts of the composition together wonderfully in a large phrase and spans a large arc. I am very happy with this interpretation - and grateful for the collaboration.'

> Trickster Orchestra
@ ECM, 2021
Picture
Singer Cymin Samawatie and percussionist Ketan Bhatti  apply their poetic musical language on a larger scale with the Trickster Orchestra. Under Cymin and Ketan’s artistic direction, the orchestra interprets their characteristic blend of transcultural modern music. With the growth of instrumentation comes an expansion of dynamics, textures and colors.
